Dorothy spent her early life working in Army Procurement in San Francisco, before attending the University of Oregon for 2 years. She then met the love of her life, William J. “Bill” Schumacher in 1952, who owned the long-standing family business of Schumacher Fur Company on 10th and Yamhill in Portland. It was here that Dorothy used her love of fashion to coordinate and organize fashion shows for the company, something she very much enjoyed.
Dorothy was an avid reader, reading as many as 3,000 books in her lifetime, with her favorites being art and history.
Along with a good friend of hers, Dorothy started one of the first preschools in the area at Vermont Methodist Church, where young children would learn important social skills before attending kindergarten.
Dorothy had many talents and hobbies she enjoyed throughout the years. She was very adept at calligraphy and enjoyed many forms of artistic expression. She helped with fundraisers for the Oregon Symphony, and loved to travel, golf, and she enjoyed the outdoors.
Her husband, Bill, preceded Dorothy in death in 2019. She is survived by her son, Kevin Schumacher of La Pine, Oregon.
Dorothy touched the hearts of many in her life and she was known for her commitment and care for others. Her cheerful smile and kind heart will always be remembered.
