Duane “Rick” Wright passed away peacefully on September 26, 2025, at the age of 79. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, veteran, and friend, Rick was known for his generous spirit, kind heart, and quiet strength.
Born in Portland, Oregon, to LaVern and Lola Wright, Rick was raised in the city he would always call home. He graduated from Franklin High School and attended Oregon State University before graduating from the Spartan School of Aeronautics.
Rick proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force, working as a jet mechanic during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he worked at Lockheed Aircraft before returning to Oregon in 1974, where he built a long and dedicated career with Willamette Industries until retiring in 2008.
On December 23, 1971, Rick married the love of his life, Joy, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Portland. Introduced by a mutual friend, their union was filled with deep love, faith, and resilience. Together they raised a family and created a home grounded in love, laughter, and service to others.
Rick was a man of many passions. An Eagle Scout and proud Mazama, he loved the outdoors—water skiing, swimming, boating, fishing, mountain climbing, and working on his sports car were among his favorite pastimes. He was a faithful member of Gresham Christian Church and actively involved in several organizations including the VFW, Franklin Alumni Association, and the Multnomah County Animal Shelter, where he volunteered his time to help animals in need.
Rick is survived by his beloved wife, Joy Wright; his children, Jesse Valenzuela, Jamie Eckertand, and Darin Wright; his grandchildren, Michael, Haley, and Ulysses; great-grandson, Colton James Eckert; his brother, Terry Wright; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
Rick will be remembered not only for his service and dedication, but for his gentle humor, quiet wisdom, and boundless compassion. His daughter shared, “He was very kind, thoughtful, and a good listener. He worked very hard for his wife and kids. He respected his parents just like the Bible said to do. He laughed with you, cried with you, and listened to you. He was patient, kind, and long-suffering. He gave you as much time as you allowed and truly loved his kids. He didn’t have to be the center of attention—he truly wanted to know you and what you were going through.”
Rick was a man who gave more than he took, always thinking of others before himself. He loved deeply, especially his wife and children, and he never gave up, even in the hardest times. His smile and laughter will be missed by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the VFW, Wounded Warrior Project, Puppy Rescue Mission, and Felines First Rescue—causes close to Rick’s heart.
