

Ena Joyce Sandstrom passed away March 26, 2016. Mrs. Sandstrom was born to James and Catherine Rilatt on September 12, 1922 in Hull, Yorkshire, England. Mrs. Sandstrom finished secondary school in the United Kingdom and with the outbreak of World War II entered national service. She served in the British Land Army and built Lancaster bombers during the course of the war. She met her husband, Colonel Edward Joseph Sandstrom, who was serving in the U.S. Army Air Force, in Grantham, England. They were married in Ascot, England in June 1945. Robert Capa was their wedding photographer. Mrs. Sandstrom immigrated to the United States in 1946 and joined her husband in Portland. Their marriage lasted 65 years. Edward Sandstrom died in 2010. Ena was active in the community life of the University of Portland where her husband was a professor and then dean of School of Business. She lived in Portland, Seattle, Longview and Vancouver Washington. She was dedicated to her family and church. She is survived by her brother, Bernard (Pauline) Rilatt of Portland and by her children, Dr. Robert (Lisa) Sandstrom, Bernard Sandstrom, Karl (Constance) Sandstrom, and John (Sallie) Sandstrom, Kathryn Gutowski (Peter) and Dr. Patricia Burke. Additional survivors include fourteen grandchildren and one great grandchild, Rose Geiger, and numerous nieces and nephews on multiple continents. Mrs. Sandstrom was preceded in death by her sisters, Kathleen, Doreen, Irene, Rita, Patricia and Pauline. Recitation of the Rosary will begin at 9:30 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM, Friday, April 1, 2016 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 25 Rosa Parks Way, Portland, Oregon. A reception will follow. Interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Holy Redeemer School. http://school.holyredeemerpdx.org/
