

Gary Dobbyn passed away at home on October 12th, 2025 at the age of 72. He was born on January 7th, 1953 in Portland, Oregon, where he lived most of his life. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Oregon in 1976, and began his career working at G&H Volume Market, the Dobbyn family store. He later worked at the Fred Meyer meat department until his retirement in 2015, where he was known for his strong work ethic.
Gary will be remembered for the love and dedication he showed his family and close friends. He was kind and charismatic, and he was generous with his warmth and enthusiasm. He believed that life is measured “in meaning, in impact, and in the people whose lives we touch”, a saying that he shared in recent years and a perspective that he lived by.
Gary was also known for his many hobbies and talents. He was a lifelong fan of the Oregon Ducks, and loved watching sports of all kinds, especially football. He also enjoyed hiking, fishing, and crossword puzzles. He had an amazing memory, and was especially talented at trivia in topics ranging from sports to history and politics. He also prided himself on being informed about current news and events.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Harlan and Jean Dobbyn. He is survived by his sister, Gail, her husband Zayan, and their daughter Kareen. A memorial service will be held at the Ross Hollywood Chapel on Saturday, October 25th at 12pm in Portland, Oregon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army.
