

Ilga Skaidrite Berzins was born in Sigulda, Latvia September 3, 1919 to Karlis and Karlina Berzins. She was raised in Latvia and attended high school there until the war drove her family out, first to Germany, and on to the United States. In 1950, Ilga moved to Oklahoma, spending some time there before moving to Chicago, where she attended trade school.
Ilga married John Dahn in Chicago, Illinois. John preceded Ilga in death.
Ilga moved to Oregon in 1990. She worked for the Federal Reserve Bank as a clerk for 25 years until her retirement.
She enjoyed gardening, and had a magical touch with roses. She could make the barest rose branch blossom into a beautiful bush. She also enjoyed traveling, and took many trips to Florida, where she spent time on the lovely beaches.
Ilga and her sister, Aina were both members of the Latvian Lutheran Church of Portland since they moved to Oregon in 1990.
Ilga passed away on November 7, 2010 in Portland. A memorial service will be at 3:00pm, Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010 in the Latvian Lutheran Church of Portland: 5500 SW Dosch Rd., Portland, OR 97239. Ilga is survived by her sister, Aina Berzins. She will forever be remembered for her social skills and generosity toward veterans. Her friends and family will remember her for forcing chocolates and candy on them whenever they visited. She will be missed.
