

Long time Portland resident Dr. Jahanara Tahir passed away Tuesday, February 24, 2015. She was 81 years old. Dr. Tahir was born in Lucknow, India in 1933 and moved to Canada from Pakistan in 1958 to attend McGill University Medical School. Dr. Tahir and her husband, Dr. Mian Tahir moved to Portland in 1964.
Dr. Tahir practiced medicine as an ob-gyn in Portland for over 40 years. She started her practice at Bess Kaiser hospital and then continued her career in private practice in Beaverton. She always loved when she would run into her former patients with their grown children, whom she had delivered.
Jahanara and Mian were some of the first immigrants to Portland from India and Pakistan, and Jahanara will be remembered for welcoming into her home everyone who followed over the years from that part of the world, making sure they had a place to go and providing many wonderful meals, conversation, and support and guidance. She was a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Portland.
Jahanara is survived by her husband of 60 years, Dr. Mian Tahir, her two sons, Haroon and Irfan Tahir, two daughters-in-law, Lisa Jeli and Melissa Tahir, and three grandchildren, Isam, Aisha, and Raffi Tahir. She is also survived by two brothers in Karachi, Pakistan and her younger brother Mamood Aziz of Newport News, Virginia.
A prayer service and committal will take place in Skyline Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home Chapel, 4101 NW Skyline Blvd., Portland, Oregon, on Saturday, February 28th, 2015, at 1pm. A public committal ceremony will take place immediately following in Skyline Memorial Gardens in the garden of Prayer.
