Jeanice Curtis passed away peacefully at her Adult Foster Care home on June 11, 2020. She was 91 years old and is survived by her sister Bev, her brother Jerry, her 2 sons Ed and Steve, 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Jeanice was born to Wayne and Oleata Burnett on April 3, 1929 in Twin Falls, Idaho. She grew up on several farms in Buhl, Idaho, where she attended a country school and graduated from Buhl High School in 1947. After graduation she moved to Portland, Oregon where she lived with her aunt, while working in the office at Roberts Brothers department store and attending business school. It was there that she met her husband Ralph Curtis (married for 53 years). They lived several places in N.E. Portland while spending over a year building their own home with their own hands on weekends.
Jeanice was a homemaker while her 2 sons were attending elementary school. She was very involved with volunteering at Joseph Meek Elementary School and served as PTA president there. She also was a member of the Rigler Elementary School’s Mothers’ Choir. During those years she also bowled in several leagues at the old Columbia Bowl on N.E. 42nd and Alberta Ct. When her oldest son entered high school, Jeanice returned to the work force, which amazed both boys, who just thought of her as “mom”, and had no idea she had occupational skills. She worked for 6 months in the office at Jantzen Knitting Mills before becoming a secretary for the Reading Program at Elliot Elementary School in North Portland. Three years later she moved to Jefferson High School, where she was the secretary for Portland Public Schools Television Services. During those years she served as PPS’ president of the Oregon Schools Employees Association as well as on several union committees. She retired in 1989 after 24 years with the Portland Public Schools.
Jeanice attended Fremont United Methodist Church for over 70 years. She sang in the chancel choir and served as a trustee and chairman of several church committees.
Outside of home, work and church Jeanice was an avid (maybe a rabid) Trail Blazer fan. She had season tickets for over 20 years, giving them up only after being unhappy with her new seats when the team moved into the new Rose Garden area. In 1973 she traveled with a good friend to 10 European countries. That sparked an interest in travel, which saw her return to Europe three more times, as well as visiting Australia, Central America and Alaska.
In lieu of flowers Jeanice requested that donations be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, as they were so helpful to her sister Sarah, who died of ALS.
