

John was born in Portland Oregon Oct. 24th 1944. He graduated from Benson Polytechnic High School.
After high school John joined the US Air Force. He spent time stationed at Vandenberg Air Force in Lompoc California and Ellsworth Air Force Base outside of Rapid City South Dakota. He was assigned to the 44th Missile Wing as a missile tech working on MinuteMan Missiles.
He was honorably discharged after 8 years and returned to Oregon, settling in Scappoose in 1973.
He was a truck driver for 35 years. It was after his retirement from truck driving that he took up bicycling.
He was an avid bike rider, easily amassing close to 200,000 miles over the years. He was a member of the Portland Bike Club where he was know as the "sweeper", the rider who lags behind to make sure no-one gets left behind or to help if a rider had a flat tire or other mechanical trouble. He was very involved in bike trail building and restoration around the PNW.
He was also a model train enthusiast and collector. A hobby that he had put away for many years, he recently had pulled out his old collection and had set them up to run in his shop while also building new cars and refurbishing old ones.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Sherman and Goldie Joy, sister Edith Goldman and Brother Dale Joy. He is survived by brother Daniel (Danny) Joy, sister Nancy Harris, daughter Kristal Langner, grandchildren Robyn Burnette, Troy Langner, Mikey Langner and 2 great grandsons Luke and Isaiah.
Indoor Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 19, 2022 10 am at Skyline Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 4101 NW Skyline Blvd., Portland, OR 97229, followed by a graveside military honors service at 11am.
At 4:30pm at Stark Street Pizza 9234 SE Stark St. Portland, Or 97216, all are additionally invited to come share stories and memories of John with his friends and family. (This is no host bar)
