John was born and raised in Portland and attended Beaumont Elementary and Grant High School. After graduation, John enlisted in the U.S.Navy where he honorably served his country on the USS Rescue during World War II. After his service, John received his business degree at Oregon State University and an MBA at New York University. He later obtained his pharmacy degree from OSU.
John joined his brother working for the family’s SE Portland pharmacy business. The Kaegi brothers worked together for 35 years. In 1973, they moved the business to Wilsonville, opening that small town’s first pharmacy. After 65 years in business, Kaegi’s Pharmacy sold to Payless in 1989. They left a lasting legacy.
John and his brother Richard preserved the history of pharmacy, becoming curators of pharmacy antiquities and memorabilia. The old time Kaegi's Pharmacy exhibit is on display at the Clackamas County Historical Society Museum of the Oregon Territory.
John was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years Lucile. His memory will be cherished by his children Susan, Carol and Mark, daughter-in-law Gina, grandchildren Katie, Allie and Michael, brother Richard, relatives and friends.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, September 13th at 11:00am at Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church where John was a long time member. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that remembrances be made in John Kaegi’s name to the OHSU Knight Cancer Challenge (OHSU Foundation, Mail Stop 45 PO Box 4000, 97208‐9852)
Arrangements under the direction of Ross Hollywood Chapel and Killingsworth, Portland, OR.
