Julie Cornelius Darrough passed away suddenly on April 22 at the age of 76. A Portland native, she went to Parkrose High School, class of 1965 where she was active in several clubs including honor society and serving as editor-in-chief of the yearbook.
Julie loved art, with plans to attend art school, she found herself being supportive of a friend by accompanying her to a job interview as a flight attendant. As fate would have it, Julie got the job and spent the next 27 years flying for NW Airlines. She traveled the globe for work and for pleasure with her late husband, Forrest Darrough Jr. MD.
Her vast travels no doubt contributed to her most often heard line “that reminds me of a story”. Julie had a great story for every occasion.
She lived in Seattle for many years before coming back to Portland 20 years ago, dividing her time between her home in The Pearl district and her beach house at Arch Cape.
Julie was the glue that held the family together and could be relied on to be a non-judgmental sounding board with practical advice. Her kindness, humor and generosity were topped by great cooking skills. Whenever Julie was around, you knew you would experience lots of laughter, great cuisine and a good time would be had by all. She will be sorely missed.
She is survived by sisters, Jannice Bartlett and Susan Berry; brother, Raymond “Spike” Cornelius; their respective spouses; and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Oregon Humane Society or Planned Parenthood.
A memorial for Julie is in the planning stages.
