Katye Louise Eckford Scarborough, a woman of faith, adventure, and unwavering love, passed away peacefully. Born July 13, 1940, in Walnut Grove, Mississippi, to Georgia Mae (Denham) and Willie James “Buster” Eckford, Katye was the third of five children: Ora Dee, Oscar, Willie James “Buster” Jr., and Jimmy Floyd.
Tragically orphaned at a young age, Katye found a loving home with her Aunt Naomi and Uncle Look Flowers in Lake, MS. This experience instilled in her a deep sense of family and a determination to succeed. Fueled by a lifelong passion for education, she pursued her studies at Piney Woods College, earning an associate's degree, and later at Jackson State College (now University). In 1962, she continued her education at Portland State University.
While in Portland, destiny intervened. Katye met the love of her life “the Oil Man”, Edward N. Scarborough. They married on December 22, 1963, in Vancouver, Washington, and together they built a life filled with love and adventure, raising two daughters, Tina Lynn and Angela Michelle. Katye and Ed were inseparable, often found enjoying the Oregon coast or trying their luck at the casino.
Katye was a quiet woman that had many talents and passions. She was a phenomenal gardener and cook. She excelled at bowling, participating in numerous leagues and tournaments across the country, including Team Hi-Rollers, Reno League, Zion League, and Oeco League. Her adventurous spirit led her on travels around the world, from the beaches of the Bahamas to the romantic streets of Paris and beyond.
A devoted member of First African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church for many years, Katye's faith was a cornerstone of her life. She actively participated in the Margaret J. May Missionary Society. Even when travelling to church became more difficult, she loved watching the services at Highland Christian Center. She was also a long-time member of the National Council of Negro Women. Professionally, after 38 years of service, she retired as a Supervisor Technician from OECOs.
Katye is lovingly remembered by her children, Tina Lynn (Daniel) Wade, Angela Michelle Briggs, Craig (Keake) Woods, Grandchildren: Tara Danielle, Shawn, Da’Love, Craig (Liz), Nanea, Milan, Brooklyn, Sister in Loves: Hattie Eckford, Ella Mae Eckford, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of extended family and friends. Her memory will be forever cherished.
