Ken went to Hosford grade school and Washington High School in South East Portland. His college years began at Vanport College now known as Portland State University, then transferred and graduated from U of O majoring in Political Science. During his college years he joined the Albert Pike Masonic Lodge as well as Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. He also served in the Naval Reserves, never seeing any active duty do to his being too tall. After graduating in 1952 he began to work as a Fire Underwriter for Loyalty Insurance group. After 6 months he left that firm to start work with the Ben Hazen Insurance Group.
In September 1953 his old college roommate asked him if he wanted to go on a blind date with a girl named Marilyn Boehle. Ken said sure " I have nothing else to do." Ken and Marilyn became engaged on Feb 14, 1954 and married April 30, 1954. He worked for various insurance companies until July 1, 1959 when he went into business for himself opening the Ken Walter Insurance company. He ran a successful business until his retirement on Jan 1, 1997.
Ken and Marilyn adopted four children, Traci in 1958, Kenneth (KC) in 1960, Ben in 1962 and Darci in 1964. They had 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren who fondly call him Bumpa. Sadly Marilyn passed in January 2007 after 53 wonderful years together. Ken was an avid fisherman who told numerous fishing stories about his many trips to the Oregon coast, Canada, Alaska, Minnesota and the Mexico. Ken and Marilyn loved to travel. They saw Europe, Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, Hawaii and most of the Continental United States. The highlight of their travels was their 50th wedding anniversary. They took the whole family on a Caribbean cruise. Got to snorkel and swim with stingrays. He would proudly tell you that he has been in all 50 states.
Ken was also a big Ducks football fan, attending numerous games at Autzen Stadium. He was an avid collector of coins and stamps, as well as Political Campaign buttons from various candidates. He had a passion for history especially the American Civil War, he had numerous documentaries and collectibles as well as visiting Gettysburg and other battle sites. For 46 years he was a member of the Gateway Elks as well as a member of the American Legion Cannon Beach chapter for many years. Most of all he cherished his family and friends valuing the time spent with them. Ken will greatly be missed, and in his true spirit he would not want us to dwell on what has happened, but to remember the good times and celebrate his life. GO DUCKS!!
