   My wife Geri and I were next door neighbors to Ed and Doris at an apartment in Eugene in the early 1960's. Both couples were newlyweds and did a lot of stuff together. Ed and I had both competed in track in high school and college when Bill Bowerman was track coach at the U of O. Bowerman had taken a group of his runners to New Zealand and found out many countryman were jogging and physically fit,something missing in the U.S.A.
   Upon returning to the U.S., Bowerman
decided to try to duplicate the fitness "craze" in Eugene and scheduled a "run" at Hayward Field in Eugene. To Bowerman's amazement, thousands showed up, including Ed,Doris,Geri,and I. Ed suggested we do this. 
   One of Bowerman's helpers that day was Buck Knight a former runner of his who had just completed his MBA at Stanford and had a vision of many folks starting to jog and would be needing running shoes.
   Knight started selling imported running shoes out of his car at track meets in Eugene. He and Bowerman determined they needed to improve on the quality of running shoes and the rest is history. Buck now goes by Phil Knight and the shoes company he owns is called Nike

   The Davis's and Barnum's participated at Hayward Field that day Buck Knight had a vision of the future for running shoes.

Doris, Scott and family:  I learned about Ed's passing the day before the service and just could not get there, I am so sorry. 
My introduction to Ed came in the early 70's at G & B where he took a green kid under his wing and made him feel welcome into a new industry.  Over the next 30+ years he continued to be that wonderful gentlemen.  Ed simply was one of the best of the best and one of my favorite people, but then he was a favorite of everyone's. Darrell & I will miss Ed very much and will remember all the wonderful times we have spent with him and Doris on several trips to Hawaii; times at our home and their home over the years.  We are thankful for the two weeks at our home a month before his untimely departure from this earth.

The conversation about our common path in separate businesses will always be memorable.
Though we grew up half a country apart those times brought us the opportunity to be cousins and friends.

Dear Ed,
I've realized in the last few days how strange life is, but at the same time, so rewarding. The four years I worked for you back in the 70's were life changing, but were also some of the best years of my life. I made some of the best friends of my life-some of whom I can still call "brothers" even to this day, (and that includes you, Scott). You enabled me to gain knowledge and ability in our trade which made it possible for me to build my career which I am still apart of all these years later. And most importantly, I met a woman at our company that I would eventually marry and raise three beautiful daughters with. She and I are both thinking about you and praying for you and your family.
You changed my life for the better, Ed, and for that I am eternally grateful. Thank you for all the wonderful camping trips, for showing us all how to fish, and for being the best camp chef we will ever have. I will always remember our experiences and your stories around the campfire. 
It was an honor to know you and I will never forget you.....Your friend.....

Ed, A dear man of God and spiritual leader of this family,  he will be greatly missed by all of us.  We are thankful to God for the years  and the many memories we share.

Such a special Uncle, and friend, who blessed our lives in so many ways.  I will miss our talks and the encouragement Ed was always to me.  You have gone before us, but we will see you again in the Presence of our Lord!

I am very grateful to have met Ed.  He was a good man and someone I looked up to.  Peace be with the whole family.

From Ekalaka, Boise and Lake Oswego our family trails together were very meaningful to the Mains and will always be treasured.  Ed, you are now out of sight, but not out of my remembrance.  Sincere sympathy to the wonderful and generous Davis family.

Thank you Uncle Ed for the many wonderful years of extremely fond memories that will always be with me.  Though the Lord takes back your earthly body, the memories of your life can never be forgotten.  I will miss you dearly.

Ed and his wife Doris were our neighbors in Mt. Park, Lake Oswego before they moved to their lovely home in Trout Lake, WA. A nicer man you would never meet.  He adored his family and especially Doris.  They were a lovely couple and I am so sad that he passed away. I know he and Doris created many wonderful memories together in their travels and at their home.
