

Lewis Henry Derthick Jr. was born August 21, 1929 to Lewis H Derthick Sr. and Myrtle Angus Meyer. Lewis was born and grew up in Portland Oregon and was a descendant of pioneer families. Lewis graduated from Franklin High School in 1947 and then attended Oregon State University. He took a leave of absence from OSU to join the Air Force Aviation Cadets training program during the Korean Conflict. In 1954, Lewis married his high school sweetheart, Mary Arden Ellis, and they traveled as a military family until the completion of his commission. In 1957 they returned to Oregon where he finished his degree in mechanical
engineering from Oregon State University. After his graduation, Lewis took a position with Crown Zellerbach which became James River Corp. and worked until his retirement in 1985. Lewis loved to fly and joined the Air National Guard after leaving the Air Force. He retired from the Oregon Air National Guard’s 123rd Fighter-Interceptor Squadron as a Lt. Colonel. Growing up in Oregon, Lewis spent a lot of time enjoying the
outdoors. He loved hunting and fishing, and camping with his family. He was also an avid golfer and loved gardening. In his later years he co-founded Lujon Wine Cellars a small family run winery. Lewis was a kind, thoughtful, and generous individual devoted to his family and friends. He was loved and admired by all who met him and will be dearly missed. Lewis is survived by his wife Mary Arden; children Daniel (Joy), Kellie Adams (Matthew), John, Michael (Natasha); grandchildren, Nicholas, Christopher, Jacob, Brenda, David
(Miranda), Skylar, Carson, and Kierra; great-grandchildren, Hayden, Sawyer, and Madelynn. Funeral services will be held March 11, 2024 at 11:00am at Finley-Sunset Hills Mortuary followed by a graveside ceremony at Willamette National Cemetery at 2:30pm.
