It is with grateful and loving hearts that we honor the passing of our sweet Mom, Lorraine Shirley Haggard (Tubbs). Mom passed away peacefully on April 16th, 2026, age 88, at her home after several weeks under hospice care. She was born on July 25, 1937, to Lee and Hennie Tubbs in Bellingham Washington and grew up in Portland, Oregon. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1956, in the same St John’s neighborhood of her childhood.
Lorraine dedicated her life to creating a warm and nurturing home for her husband of 69+ years, Melvin, and their five children. Mom’s greatest joy came from spending time with her family and fostering a loving home where she and the love of her life spent over 40 years raising 4 sons and a daughter.
Lorraine is survived by her husband, Melvin, and children, Larry (Theresa) Haggard, Brian (Partner Ruth Graham) Haggard, Shari (Robert) Hutchinson, Steven Haggard, and Jim (Jody) Haggard, plus eleven grandchildren and step-grandchildren, and, at the moment, 15 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Bettie (Elmo) Frame, sisters-in-law Marlene (Chris) Christensen and Bonnie (Richard) Haggard, along with too-many-to-list nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, even a few great-grand nieces and nephews! She is predeceased by her parents, Lee and Hennie (Hensen) Tubbs, brothers-in-law Elmo Frame, Chris Christensen, Donald Haggard, and Richard Haggard.
Lorraine and Mel met on a double date with friends in 1955, though it was quickly clear that there were sparks between these two, not their actual dates! Mom and Dad fell head over heels in love and married on December 27th, 1956. The first several years of their married life were spent in Los Angeles, California, where their first four children were born in quick succession. By their 8th anniversary, the couple had 4 children under the age of 6 and their house was full of laughing, busy children. The family eventually moved back to their hometown Portland, raised the first four to teenagers, then added their 4th son, Jim, in 1977.
Lorraine’s life has always been dedicated to loving her adoring husband, raising her precious children, helping care for grandchildren, managing a loving and comfortable household. She loved cooking and baking for the family, working voraciously on knitting projects, tending to her flower garden and yard, and providing a welcoming home to family and visitors alike.
Lorraine also treasured her deep faith in her Lord and Saviour as a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church, joining churches in neighborhoods wherever she and Mel lived. As they settled in southeast Portland, they became members of Ascension Lutheran Church and actively served in their home church for almost 50 years. In earlier years, both Mel and Lorraine served as Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teachers and for decades, without fail, were passionate members of the church choir.
Please join us in celebration of Lorraine’s life and in honor of her beautiful soul. A public visitation will take place from 5-8 pm on Friday, May 8 at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home in Portland, Oregon, 11801 SE Mt. Scott Blvd. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 9, at 11:00 am at Ascension Lutheran Church in Portland, Oregon, 1440 SE 182nd Ave. Private family interment will be at Skyline Memorial Gardens.
