

Manuel Jato Macias was born in Portland. He graduated from Benson High School and earned degrees from the University of Portland, North- western University and the University of Madrid. He became a professor of Spanish at the University of Portland and taught there for 36 years, retiring in 1995. During his career he earned numerous teaching awards and was named Spanish Teacher of the Year. He also held various positions in the field of education. He served as grand marshal at University of Portland graduations for many years. He was the son of Diego and Maria who were immigrants from Spain. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Salvatore. He was a remarkable man with a fun-loving spirit and had a great dedication and devotion to his students. His motto was My greatest personal success is in the success of my students." He was admired by both students and faculty. He was loyal, kindhearted and generous. He loved to travel and enjoyed visiting family in Spain and friends all over the world. He was a fantastic cook and loved entertaining his family and friends with an enormous Thanksgiving feast. He also enjoyed cooking traditional Spanish dishes such as paella and flan. He was a member of the Oregon Electric Railway Historical Society. He is survived by many loving cousins and friends. A Catholic Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 28, 2016, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 5227 N. Bowdoin St., Portland. Viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church just prior to the service. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Portland. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Development Department University of Portland, 5000 N. Willamette Blvd., Portland, OR 97203 in memory of Manuel Macias.
