Maggi was born on August 23, 1929, in Portland, Oregon, to William Abraham Schamp and Arzena Ruth Deadmond. She is survived by her husband James Hamley, daughters Marcia Hamley and Carol Hamley, and son-in-law Kirk Lambert.
She attended grade school in Portland, high school in Oregon City, and college at Northwest Christian College and the University of Oregon, both in Eugene. She graduated with a Bachelor of Theology degree and a Bachelor of Arts in Nursing degree. She completed her nurse’s training at the U of O School of Nursing in Portland, graduating as a Registered Nurse.
In her career, she worked as a hospital floor nurse, an oncology nurse, and for most of her career as an operating room (O.R.) nurse. For several years she served as the Head Nurse of O.R. North at OHSU in Portland. She worked at OHSU, Willamette Falls, and Holladay Park hospitals.
Later, she utilized her extensive medical knowledge in a second career in medical transcription.
Maggi and Jim were married on September 24, 1955, and would have celebrated their 63rd anniversary this September. They enjoyed traveling throughout the Northwest, but especially to the Oregon coast. They made several trips to Victoria, BC, where they had gone on their honeymoon, as well as other areas in Canada. They also made two very enjoyable trips to England and Europe.
Both Maggi and Jim retired near the end of 1999 and enjoyed their retirement years together. Both have been active members of First Christian Church in Portland for all of their married lives.
Maggi passed away suddenly on June 9 this year, after surgery for a leg fracture. After several years with other medical problems, her body was not able to recover from the surgery and she passed away the next day.
There will be a funeral service on June 15, at 2:00, at Lincoln Memorial Park Funeral Home. There will also be a memorial celebration of her life on July 21, at 1:00, at First Christian Church.
She will be greatly missed by family and friends for her ever-present smile and gentle nature.
