Margaret Sue (Coberly) Maloney was born July 30, 1936 in Elkins, West Virginia to Robert and Alice Coberly. She was raised in West Virginia, where she graduated from Grafton High School in 1954. Following graduation, Margaret married and moved to Panama as a Navy wife. In Panama, she started her family, later moving back to West Virginia and then settling in Seattle, Washington in 1962.
Margaret was a homemaker and devoted mother to her children, Billy, Becky and Cathy. She also worked as a representative for Safeco Insurance Company for over 25 years until her retirement in 1998. In retirement, Margaret relocated to Portland, Oregon to be close to her daughters. Margaret was a sports enthusiast. Some of her favorite teams were the Portland Trailblazers, the Seattle Seahawks, and the Oregon Ducks. According to her children though, “she just loved a good game,” regardless of what teams were playing. She also enjoyed playing “Angry Birds” on her iPad, never missed Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune, and often had to have her electronic Yahtzee game removed from her hands when she would fall asleep holding it. Margaret loved taking trips to the coast, bird watching, and spending time with her beloved children, grandchildren and her cat, Max. Above all, Margaret was simply a “good mom and grandma,” known as “Gammie” to many.
Margaret passed away January 17, 2012 in her home in Portland, Oregon. A funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., Sunday, January 22, 2012 in Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home. Margaret is survived by her children, Bill Maloney, Becky Sayres (Cory) and Cathy Maloney; sisters, Roberta Bistany (Joe) and Ruth Russell (Charles); brother, Bob Coberly; and grandchildren, Jenna, Suzie, Mandi, Ronni and Danielle. Margaret will be remembered for her endless love and support of her family, her quirky sayings, her “mean” Spaghetti & Meatballs, and her grandchildren's favorite dish, chipped beef on toast. She is loved and will be missed. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Margaret’s name to DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital.
