With heavy hearts and tearful eyes, we must announce the passing of our beloved confidant, friend, mother, and grandmother, Marlene Elizabeth Jarvi Hertzog Patterson, on February 5th, 2022. Her passing came peacefully and blessedly quick while in care in Gresham, Oregon. With grace and grit, she had made it to her 84th year. Marlene was born on January 13th, 1938, in Marquette, MI. When she was young, her parents relocated to Portland, Oregon, bringing her unique sunshine to the often overcast Pacific Northwest. She was one of five children and had close relationships with her family but especially her mother. Miss Jarvi met her first husband, Robert, through her sister, Jean. They lived in many different places like, Oregon, California and even Germany, while he built his military career and she birthed 3 healthy children, Denise, Robert Jr., and Michael. In her second marriage to Patt, she was blessed again with her fourth and final child, Samantha. While her children were little, Marlene was able to be their caretaker full time. Later in life, she exercised her varied skills in many different jobs including: bakery manager, room inspector for a resort, caregiver to elderly, and several different positions in food & beverage. Over the years, Marlene cared for everyone: friends, children, grandchildren, plants, and pets. She cooked and baked, drawing rabid fans to her kitchen. Anyone left with one of her hand knitted blankets, has a priceless labor of love. She could be silly and serious. Fun and funny, our girl loved to laugh and gather. Marlene lived a long life full of love and good temperament. She is survived and mourned by her children, grandchildren: Michael Jr., Crystal, Helena, Marisa, Bryana, Natalie, Wyatt, and Liana; and great-grandchildren: Persius, Logan, Mathew, Maylee and Madelyn. The impact she made on their lives will continue on. She will be remembered with lightness, with sadness, and with admiration. Please share your favorite memories of Marlene here, so she can continue to add laughter into our lives. While there will be no service, you could raise a glass of her favorite cocktail, Fuzzy Navel, in her honor.
