

Marta was born in Cycow Poland to Hermann and Maria Munch. She was raised on her family’s farm.The farm had fruit orchards, grain fields, horses and farm animals. Marta had fond memories of growing up on the farm. At the age of eighteen, Marta and her family were forced to relocate to Germany due to World War II. The German government moved the family to a smaller farm where they lived for a few years. During that time, Marta worked in a grocery store where she met her future husband Oskar Boroske. As the Russian front moved westward in Germany, away from the Russian border, the family was forced to move westward to Hildesheim Germany. Marta, her husband, and his sister and niece lived for five years as displaced Germans in someone elses home in Hildesheim. During this time, daughter Christiane was born and Marta worked on a beet farm as a laborer. In 1951 Marta, Oskarand Christiane came to America on the General Taylor Transport Troop Ship, in hopes of a better life. Unable to speak English, they landed in New York where they were given $150 by the Pentecostal Church. They took the train from New York to Portland. In Portland, they were sponsored through the Pentecostal church by the Tracy family. They also knew of distant relatives, the Springer family who lived in Portland. Shortly thereafter the family purchased a home in the St. John’s area of Portland and enjoyed working in their beautiful yard, and large garden. The family made wonderful lifelong friendships while living in St. John’s. Daughter Karen was born in 1954. Oskar worked for the International Lead Company. Marta’s first job was at night, cleaning a government office building in downtown Portland. Later the family built a house in Southwest Portland where they lived for many years. Marta then worked at Albertsons and Safeway in the bakery department as top saleslady. The family enjoyed spending time at their cabin on Mt. Hood and later a cabin at Siltcoos Lake. Sadly,Oskar passed away at the young age of 58. Marta’s many activities included, traveling, gardening,cooking, baking, sewing, square-dancing, pinochle and spending time at the beach. She most enjoyed spending time with her children and granddaughter Kaiti. Marta was socially active and she was very involved in her church and was also a member of the Frauen Verein, and German Club. Marta issurvived by her daughters, Christiane Boroske, Karen Boroske Davis , son-in-law Peter Davis, granddaughter Kaiti Tyler, Kaiti’s husband Clement Tyler, Marta’s sister Adelgunde Brandes of Hamm, Germany, and her niece Helga Feldmann of Gutersloh, Germany. A memorial service will be held at the Zion Lutheran Church in Southwest Portland on Thursday, June 20, 2013 at 11am. Interment will be held at Skyline Memorial Gardens in Portland. Remembrances may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church Guild in Portland.
