

Mavis Ruth Hamel, age 94, of Damascus, OR passed away peacefully on February 27, 2025. Born on June 4, 1930, Mavis was a woman full of life, creativity, and boundless energy. She had a profound love for her family, and her passions were as varied and vibrant as her personality. Mavis enjoyed cooking and making things by hand, always sharing her warmth with those around her. She was an avid gardener, and spent countless hours tending to her plants, finding joy in the beauty of nature.
In addition to gardening, Mavis cherished the outdoors, often seen camping, fishing, and hunting, where she formed lasting memories with loved ones. A talented craftswoman, Mavis was skilled in sewing and crocheting, and her handmade gifts were treasured by all who received them. She lived life vividly, approaching every day with an infectious enthusiasm that inspired everyone who knew her.
Mavis was preceded in death by her parents, Ida Mae McFarren and Charles Elmer McFarren.
She is survived by her siblings: Helen Mae Jarvis, Floyd Elmer McFarren, Robert Elroy McFarren, and Alan James McFarren.
Her children: Arne D. Hamel (and his spouse, Sharon L. Hamel), Pamela Marie Vaun (and her spouse, Rod Shannon), and Patricia Diane Brown. Mavis was also a proud grandmother to Angela L. Windheim (and her spouse, Brian Windheim), Danielle Merrill, Racheal Vann, Jesse Vann, and Jared Brown. Her legacy lives on in her great-grandchildren: Benjamin, Jose, Samuel, Noah, Madison, Nora, Brooke, and Logan.
Mavis will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She touched the lives of many through her kindness, creativity, and love.
Rest in peace, Mavis. You will always be remembered with love.
