Melvin attended Milwaukie High School. He was in the Air Force from 1951 – 1955.
Mel met the love of his life, Shirley, in Portland through Mel’s cousin, Bill Kanne. Melvin and Shirley later married in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. They went on to be married for nearly 70 years, until Mel’s passing on January 7th.
His career was spent working at Nabisco. He was a mixer, stirring up their trademark cookies and crackers. Mel retired from Nabisco after 35 years of service.
In his free time, Mel enjoyed trout and salmon fishing and deer and elk hunting. He loved football, especially his beloved Oregon Ducks! Mel was always sure to put on his Ducks shirt when he knew a game was being played.
Mel had a wonderful sense of humor, and he was always making jokes. He was a generous and hard-working man and was always very loyal to his family. He will be remembered as a loving and smiling grandpa and faithful and loving husband.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Shirley Zinser, daughters, Laurie (Kyle) Dye and Michelle (Travis) Baker; son, Scott Zinser; grandchildren: Hayden Baker, Grace Baker, Giahna Baker, Gabryelle Waltemeyer, Krystopher Zinser, and Trevor Zinser; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Jessica Leonard.
No services will be held for Melvin Zinser, though the family plans on scattering his ashes in April.
