

Mike was born on May 10, 1948, to Janet Donnet Holstun and John Tucker Holstun on the Auburn University campus in Auburn, Alabama. He spent most of his high school years at Leland High School in Mississippi, where he built strong friendships and memories that lasted his lifetime. He spent his senior year at Springbrook High School in Silver Spring, Maryland. In 1970, Mike graduated from Auburn University with a bachelor’s in economics. Following graduation, Mike was drafted and served two years in the Army during the Vietnam War as a standby reserve. While at Auburn University, Mike met his first wife, Beverly Cope Holstun, and they were married in 1971. Mike then went on to post-graduate studies at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, earning a master’s degree in urban planning in 1974. While in Knoxville, Mike’s first son Zachary was born in 1973.
Mike started his career in Land Use, working as a County Planner for Calvert County in Maryland, before ultimately deciding to head west for law school. He attended Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland, graduating in 1980. Mike spent his early years as an attorney working for Metro and the McEwan Gisvold law firm, before joining the Oregon Department of Justice. In 1987, Mike was first appointed to the Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals and appointed again in 1998. Mike finished his legal career serving approximately 28 years on LUBA.
In 1995, Mike met Stefania Allison Holstun while training for the Portland Marathon. They married in 1998 and welcomed Mike’s second son Tucker in 1999. In 2018, Mike retired and spent his time enjoying home life and travelling with Stefania and Tucker, backpacking with both of his boys, running the trails with his dog, auditing classes at Portland State University and watching his beloved Auburn Tigers play football (War Eagle!).
Mike is survived by his wife, Stefania; sons Zack (Amy) and Tucker; brothers Britt (Jeananne), Jim (Joanna) and Clayton; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and Zack’s mother Bev.
