the second eldest child of Minnie Bell Hornbuckle and Howard Hornbuckle,
Sr. She married William Clark, Sr. on June 10, 1939. Together they blazed the
trail for the Hornbuckle migration to the Pacific Northwest in 1944. After
settling in Oregon they continued to build their family and to their union, were
nine children.
Mittie had a true servant’s heart; she was a dedicated mother who cared for
those less fortunate on a regular basis. When asked about her service to those
in need, Mittie replied, “I didn’t have to know who they were, if I saw
somebody in my neighborhood that looked like they needed help, I would ask
if they were hungry and invite them in and feed them.” She always kept
Matthew 25:35-36 in the forefront of her mind: “For I was an hungered, and
ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye
took me in: naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in
prison, and ye came unto me.”
Mittie loved taking trips to the Pacific Ocean and other nearby scenic
locations. In 1997, she took a trip back to Birmingham, Alabama where she
reconnected with one of her closest childhood friends. Like the two little girls
they once were, they shared in disbelief, laughter, tears, hugs and memories.
She also attended a family reunion, where she reconnected with other family
and friends; she saw many cherished places she hadn’t seen in over 53 years.
Her hobbies included gardening, fishing, drawing, sewing, cooking, teaching
others how to dance, watching wrestling, spending time with her pets, and
listening to Motown music, especially the Temptations.
Preceding her in death are her parents, Howard Hornbuckle, Sr. and Minnie
Bell Hornbuckle; husband, William Clark, Sr.; two sisters, Zula Johnson and
Earnestine Hawkins; two brothers, William Hornbuckle and Howard
Hornbuckle; two grand-children, Richard Marlon Clark and Araina Clark.
To continue her legacy she leaves five sons, William Clark, Jr., Harold Clark,
Leonard Clark, Hertis Clark, and Gerry Clark; four daughters, Josephine
Griffith, Joyce Clark, Wanda Clark, and Brenda Clark; one daughter-in-law,
Sherrill Clark; 42 grand-children, 38 great-grand children, and 15 great-greatgrand
children. To cherish her memory, she leaves four
sisters, Ruby Johnson, Bernice Hornbuckle, Helen
Murray, and Myrtle Minnieweather; one sister-in-law,
JuliaMae Hornbuckle; two brothers-in-law, Nelson
Murray and Stewart Minnieweather; and a host of nieces,
nephews, cousins, and friends.
