Nathan (named after his father), Screamer (given to him for being such a loud active baby), Dad (given to him by his children), and the name he was proud of the most… Papa (given to him by his grandchildren).
Nathan Forcept Powell III was born November 18, 1952 in Memphis, Tennessee to Hattie Lee Powell and the late Nathan Forcept Powell II, and was the second oldest of seven children. It was early in life Screamer showed a protective nature when it came to those he loved. From sitting on the porch so his sister Rosalind could play outside to talking cheek-to-cheek with his brother Ron, he put other people's needs before his own. He carried this kindhearted, protective nature everywhere he went. Growing up in Memphis, he graduated from Mitchell High School. He continued his education at State Tech where he was able to experience his love for football as a running back and found the space to become the strong man we would all come to know.
As a young man, Nathan married and would later relocate to Portland, Oregon. He later married again where he would build a loving and devoted home with his wife. It was here he continued living his life as a husband, a father, and eventually a grandfather. Through these years he demonstrated commitment, humor, perseverance, pride in coaching his sons middle school basketball teams where he became Coach, love for cooking, attention to detail, and love for family.
As a forklift operator, Nathan built a 36 year career with Georgia-Pacific where he was known for his strong work ethic, dedication to achieve goals, and most importantly closeness with friends.
As a kind and loving man, Nathan treasured his family above all else. With favorites such as George Clinton and The Temptations, he had a passion for music. He spent much of his time keeping his yard in perfect condition, chasing after his grandchildren, playing computer games, camping at the beach, watching sports (Portland Trail Blazers & Arizona Cardinals), and traveling to spend time with loved ones. His warm presence, gentle spirit, and joyful laughter touched all who knew him.
On Tuesday, August 12, 2025 Nathan was called home. He leaves cherished and loved by his beloved wife, his children, grandchildren, devoted mother, brothers and sisters, and a host of extended family members and friends. His life and love will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched.
Nathan, Screamer, Dad, Papa… we will miss you.
