April 29, 2011
Opal Mae Miller was born to parents Charles F. and Birdie M. (Endersby) Cox on November 14, 1923.
She was born on a farm in Pine Grove, Oregon, 16 Miles west of Maupin.
She attended a one building school house for grades 1-8. She graduated from Maupin High School. Opal worked for a short period in a restaurant in Dufur that sold pies. It was there that Opal began developing the great aptitude for pie making that she came to be known for.
At 18, she moved to Portland to attend Business School. She put herself through school working for American Lumber Co.
She met Charles in 1943 in Seaside, OR where he was stationed as a radar man in the Army Signal Corps. Opal and Charles exchanged wedding vows in September of 1944 in Ellinwood, Kansas. Charles was discharged in 1946, and soon they began their family.
The family moved to the Beaverton area in 1954. Much of their family life was centered around Beaverton Christian Church. Opal was a Pre-School Teacher in Beaverton Christian from 1966-72. From 1972- 1985, Opal taught Pre-School in Ann & Andy Kinder College where she worked with her daughter Cheryl.
Opal was not one to sit still. She liked to be busy and engaged in doing. She liked to sew and she made beautiful dresses for herself and her daughter. Opal was a devoted wife and mothrer and she was a wonderful homemaker. With all of her family, church, and household responsibilities, she still had time to serve as a bookkeeper for her husband Charles' business. She learned to play the piano and the organ and enjoyed that very much. She also enjoyed going for car rides together with Charles, and maybe to a favorite place out to eat. Her most favorite thing to do was spend time with her grandchildren, they are so special to her. She will always be remembered for the many ways in which she shared her love with her family.
Opal is predeceased by her parents Charles and Birdie Cox; sisters Beulah and Lillian; and brothers Leonard and Dudley.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Charles; daughter Cheryl Castillo; sons Larry and Robert Miller; grandchildren Janice Geier, Helen Castillo, Victor, Castillo Jr., and Jonathan Castillo; and a great great-granddaughter, Anna Geier.
A celebration of Opal's life will take place in Beaverton Christian Church in Beaverton, Oregon, on Wednesday, May 11, at 2:00 PM. All are welcome.
