Paul Evans Bishop Sr. passed away on Father’s Day at 83 years old with 33 years clean & sober. He was born in Portland, OR to Grace E. Bishop and Paul Lowry Bishop. He was raised with help from his uncle USCG Capt. Fred Evans after his father died in 1934. He learned to paint the house and weed the rock garden and from the age of 14 worked driving delivery routes around greater Portland.
Paul married Margaret Cranston in 1955 and they raised two sons, Paul E. Bishop Jr., and Fred (Phred) A. Bishop. He joined the Navy and then the Merchant Marines and was a proud member of The Flying 15 Motorcycle Club. After retiring from sea, he worked 22 years as a firefighter for Portland Engine 16.
In 1974 he moved to the family tree farm and dedicated the rest of his life to planting trees in the fields cleared by his ancestors. He graduated from motorcycle riding trials to a bicycle advocate, riding all over America. You could not pry him off his bike! He also bragged about having lunch with the Dalai Lama.
Paul was an active member of AA as a Sober Senior and held many memberships from Veteran’s Affairs to forestry to fungus. He loved his grandkids and great-grandkids very much. With the compassion of his family and many others, he was able to end his fight with cancer at the beloved farm where he had planted thousands of trees as well as grow truffles & mushrooms.
A celebration of Paul’s life will be held at 12PM on July 3rd, 2011 at his tree farm: 22263 S Dans Ave, Beavercreek, OR 97804. Donations are welcome to the Paul E. Bishop Family, LLC
Arrangements under the direction of Ross Hollywood Chapel & Killingsworth St. John's Lombard Little Chapel of the Chimes, Portland, OR.
