…was called home to heaven on October 6, 2015 at the age of 85 after a long illness.
Phyllis was born on February 12, 1930 in San Antonio, Texas to Clara and Walter Cochran. Clara died from complications with childbirth shortly after. Her father married Pauline Hecht a few years later, and that is who she knew as Mom and who instilled in her a strong faith in Jesus as her Savior. Phyllis was baptized on May 28, 1933 at Messiah Lutheran Church in St. Louis, Missouri, and was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mt. Rainer, Maryland on March 29, 1942. Phyllis graduated from Trinity Lutheran High School in Oregon City, Oregon on June 1, 1947.
Phyllis met Milo while both worked at the Methodist Publishing House. They became engaged on March 10, 1954 after dating for one month, and were married at Zion Lutheran Church in Portland, Oregon on May 28, 1954. They chose to remain in the Portland area and raise their family here. Phyllis was a homemaker and loved cooking and baking for her family and friends. She enjoyed teaching Sunday School and VBS, made friends with all of her neighbors, and shared her faith openly with everyone she met. Many of their friends looked forward to her Christmas cookie platters and Christmas stollen, or a round of caramel or cinnamon rolls at Easter. After Milo’s retirement they enjoyed traveling around the United States to visit family and friends. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on May 28, 2004, just a few months before Milo was called home to heaven after a short fight against cancer. Soon after Phyllis began experiencing physical symptoms which eventually led to a diagnosis of CBGD. She fought the disease with everything she had.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Walter S. Cochran Jr., and Milo. She is survived by her daughters, Debra Campbell Koppel (Dave) and granddaughters Heather Parmley (Jerry) and Rebekah Olsovsky (Aaron); and Susan Lorenz (Andy) and grandchildren Melanie Davis (Austin) and Jacob Lorenz; five great grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Doris Poindexter; and nephews and niece Corky Cochran, Mick Cochran, Scott Cochran, Barry Cochran, Mary Botkin, Scott Piercey, and their families.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to Bethlehem Lutheran Church Building Fund (Beaverton, Oregon), or to Housecall Providers, www.housecallproviders.org.
The memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 18865 SW Johnson St., Beaverton, OR 97006. Private interment will be in the morning at Willamette National Cemetery.
Phyllis now joins the saints in heaven having received the crown of victory promised to all those who place their trust in Christ alone for their eternal life. The body was interred at Willamette National Cemetery to await the assured hope of the resurrection on the day of Christ’s return. As her soul now rejoices with the saints in paradise, this service celebrates the life of one of God’s faith children who placed her trust in Jesus as the only way to heaven.
