January 9, 1946 - May 20, 2026
Robert Foster Cook, Jr., was born at St. Vincent Hospital in Portland, Oregon, January 9, 1946, to Robert and Joeinne (Heffernan) Cook. He passed away peacefully May 20, 2026, in Beaverton.
Rob grew up in Portland and attended King Elementary before moving west to Sunset Blvd. and Robert Gray Elementary and Wilson High School. As a child, Rob enjoyed spending time with his paternal grandparents at their home on North Princeton in Portland, and his maternal grandparents on their Sherwood farm and their trailer across from Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach.
As a teenager, Rob moved east with his family to Pendleton, where he spent some of the best years of his life, met great friends, and graduated from Pendleton High School in 1964. He graduated from Eastern Oregon University and lived in La Grande before returning to Portland for a job at Oregon Steel Mills. Rob was a welder, a dredge captain, and Navigation Division Manager at the Port of Portland.
Rob was a lifelong learner, a reader, scuba diver, mushroom forager, home chef, bartender, wood carver, and animal lover, especially dogs Sadie May, Babe, CeCe, Sarah, Momo, and Rosie. He was also a teacher. He worked with his brother on restoring a Model A. He taught his daughters how to properly (and quickly!) dig a razor clam; drive an old phone company utility truck; stack wood; rototill the garden; and eat a Walla Walla sweet onion like an apple.
He looked forward to the Astoria Sunday Market, meeting two of his best buddies, Dan and Barry. Rob and Lynn also took cooking classes at The Duncan Law Seafood Center in Astoria. They spent time at the Waves in Cannon Beach, and returned to Pendleton for high school reunions. Rob enjoyed friends Sharon Whalen and her poodle Rosie, who faithfully visited Rob every day for four years.
Rob is survived by his wife, Lynn; daughter, Jenny Morrison (Hugh, Olivia, Ella); stepchildren Ryan Zerr (Jess, Eli, Caleb) and Tami Werts (Travis, Ariana, Ethan); sister, Pam Fuller; brother, Ross Cook (Joyce); and nephews Ryan Fuller, Ross Cook, and Joe Cook. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Molly Cook; and brother-in-law and nephew, Bill and Kevin Fuller. A heartfelt thank you to Rob’s caregivers at Maryville and the Providence hospice nurses for such excellent and kind care. At Rob’s request, there will be no service. In his memory, enjoy a meal at Dan & Louis Oyster Bar, or make a memorial contribution to The Oregon Humane Society.
