Bob was born in Seattle and moved to Portland in 1948 to work with his father on Portland's main water pipeline construction. After serving in the U.S. Army and OR National Guard, Bob began a 30+ year career as a U.S. History and Government teacher at David Douglas High School. With his patience and passion for learning, he touched the lives of countless generations of students. Bob was honored with appointments as Social Studies Dept. Chair, Mentor Teacher, and as a reader of Advanced Placement American History national exams.
Bob dedicated much of his time volunteering with church and service organizations. He assisted many families in need at East County's Snow-Cap and through work with the Gideons. Bob also focused his energies as a David Douglas Historical Society Board Member in creating the book, "History and Folklore of the David Douglas Community."
Bob enjoyed music, camping, hunting, and especially fishing. As husband, father, and instructor, Bob always sought to teach and support others. Committed to his word and tasks, Bob's leadership gave purpose and possibility to the work at hand.
Bob loved to laugh and despite years of declining health, he often joked with family and friends. His wife, Pat, sons Alan and Ryan, and four grandchildren feel blessed to have shared our lives with him.
His service will be held at Gethsemene Lutheran Church in Portland at 10 am, Thursday, September 15, 2011, with committal to follow in Skyline Memorial Gardens. For more information, please contact the Funeral Home at 503-292-6611
