Robert L Stanley

December 30, 1921– February 5, 2013

Dr. Robert Stanley passed away in Portland after a short illness.

Born December 30, 1921 in Seattle to Roy and Margaret Lauritsen Stanley, Rob graduated from the University of Washington with Bachelor and Master degrees in mathematics, and attended Harvard University, earning his Doctorate in symbolic logic. He served aboard the U.S.S. Johnnie Hutchins during WWII as the engineering officer, having graduated from Annapolis.

In 1947 he married Catherine Umphrey, who predeceased him in 1996.

He was a mathematical professor at Portland State from 1961 to 1987, when he retired and spent his later years at the family's home on Puget Sound with his cat, Sam. He was the most gentle and caring man who loved building boats, hiking in the Olympics, getting together with old friends for singing and a good game of chess, solving complex mathematical problems, philosophy, doing research in his set of Enclyclopedia Brittanica, CNN, cats, food, and a good stout. Even at 91 he was planning to write a book.

Rob is survived by his sons, Mark and wife Denise, and Paul and wife Donna; and two granddaughters, Stella, and Madeline and Martin Lundell, all of Portland. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife of 49 years, and his sister, Margaret Tuter.
