Roger Kay Porret was born July 7, 1946 in Duluth, Minnesota, one of two children of Richard Edward Porret and Charlotte (Jane) Buttrick. They moved in 1951 to St. Maries, Idaho, again to Sunland, California in 1952, and in 1955 settled in Portland.
While still living in Idaho, Roger’s cousins would let him drive the snowmobile, and he would go fishing on Porret Lake with his dad. He worked with his parents at Culver City Bible School from 1972 to 1978. His mother was the chef and his father was grounds maintenance. One of the students taught Roger to recite the New Testament books of the Bible and would give Roger hand signals if he hesitated. When he worked at Multnomah University, Agnes was the chef and Roger would always tell her that he was going to take her to Hawaii for their “honeymoon.” She gave him a mug with bears ice skating on it, and Roger would tell everyone that the bears were he and Agnes.
On the first of every month, Roger tried to be the first one to say, “Rabbit!” and the other staff used to try to beat him to it – even hiding in the kitchen to leap out and yell, “Rabbit!” before he knew they were there.
Roger’s favorite sport was basketball and he enjoyed watching the Trailblazers. His favorite color was red. He had a good-natured sense of humor. His favorite joke was, “How do you get a horse out of the bathtub? You pull the old plug out!” Once he told a family member as he entered the house, “You look very sharp today – be careful you don’t cut yourself!”
Roger will be missed by his sister Janet Smith, and by nephews Cory R. Smith and his wife Angie and their children, Lane Smith and his son, and Casey Smith.
A public visitation will be held Tuesday, February 6, 2024 from 1 to 2:45 pm at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 11801 SE Mt. Scott Blvd, followed by a graveside committal service at 3 pm. A memorial service is pending at Eastgate Bible Chapel, 11410 SE Stark Street in Portland.
