Samuel "Sam" Pengelly, 79, passed away peacefully on November 22, 2025, in Portland, Oregon. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and artist, Sam lived a life marked by quiet strength, creativity, and compassion.
Born on November 8, 1946, in Spokane, Oregon, Sam grew up with a deep appreciation for the natural world that would shape his personal and professional life. He pursued higher education at the University of Washington, where he laid the foundation for a distinguished career in water chemistry. Over the years, he worked with Watercare and Chemco before founding Pengelly and Associates. His work reflected not only scientific rigor but also a profound respect for the environment.
Sam served his country with honor as a member of the U.S. Army’s 1st Cavalry Division during the Vietnam War. His military service was marked by courage and dedication, culminating in an honorable discharge. The discipline and resilience he developed during those years remained with him throughout his life.
Beyond his professional and military accomplishments, Sam was known for his gentle demeanor and calm presence. He had a kind word for strangers and a warm heart for those around him. His family remembers him as a protector—steadfast and loving—and as someone who brought people together through simple joys like his legendary Thanksgiving meals.
Sam was married to Shirlee Templeton, with whom he shared a rich life filled with love and mutual respect. Together they raised three children: Emily Pengelly, Woodrow Pengelly, and Jay Pengelly. He took immense pride in their lives and found great joy in being a grandfather to George and Oliver.
A man of many talents and passions, Sam expressed himself through photography, leatherwork, watercolors, stained glass art, poetry—and above all else—a deep connection to nature. Whether hiking forest trails or canoeing across still waters, he found peace outdoors. His artistic pursuits were not just hobbies but reflections of how he saw the world: full of beauty worth preserving.
Those who knew Sam will remember him as athletic in spirit and generous in soul—a man who lived deliberately and loved deeply.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspiration to those who hear his story. A Committal Service will be held on February 20, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Willamette National Cemetery 11800 SE Mt Scott Blvd. Reception at Leach Gardens to follow.
