

She was the daughter of Thomas & Grace Hickey & the cherished sister of Scott & Kirk Hickey.
Sandy spent her early years on the East Coast before moving to San Diego during high school. Bright, motivated, & compassionate, she overcame significant adversity to earn a scholarship to Stanford University, where she studied to become a Physician Assistant. It was a move that shaped the direction of her life—both professionally & personally. After graduating from Stanford, Sandy began her medical career in Sonoma County & the Bay Area, including work at a methadone clinic serving individuals & families affected by addiction.
Through her love of the outdoors, The Sierra Club, & a cross-fit class he was teaching, Sandy met her husband, Dale Merrick. They married in January 1981 & in search of a quieter life, moved to Yamhill, OR, & later settled in Beaverton, OR, where they raised their two sons, David Michael Merrick, born in March 1981, & Christopher Stephen Merrick, born in March 1985.
Once her sons were older, Sandy followed her passion for helping children learn & thrive by returning to school at Portland State University, where she earned a master’s degree in Special Education.
Sandy’s family continued to grow. After graduating high school, David studied medicine on the east coast, where he met Katherine Uyhazi. They both graduated from Yale in 2013 & married in 2015. They welcomed their daughters, in Eloise, 2018, & Colleen, in 2021. Chris attended college in southern Oregon, & ventured to Hawaii & Texas, but ultimately decided Beaverton was his home, He moved back & met Megan Merrick (Parker) They married & welcomed Sandy’s first grandchild, Connor in 2011.
She found joy in gardening, painting, family dinners, & time with her grandchildren. She loved the Beaverton community & spent many years as a substitute teacher in the Beaverton School District. She retired in 2015 & enjoyed a peaceful life surrounded by family, close friends, & the neighborhood she loved.
Sandy was known for her intelligence, kindness, & unwavering devotion to family. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, perseverance, & love. She will be deeply missed.
Sandy is survived by Dale Merrick, beloved husband, David Merrick, eldest son, Katherine Uyhazi, daughter-in-law, Eloise Merrick, granddaughter, Colleen Merrick, granddaughter, Christopher Merrick, youngest son, Megan Merrick, daughter-in-law, Connor Merrick, grandson, Kirk Hickey, brother, & Scott Hickey, brother.
A graveside service will be held first, followed by a memorial service on January 17, 2026, beginning between 10:00 & 11:00 a.m.
