Velissarios Kokkoris, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at the age of 95. Born in Kimi, Greece, he was the third of seven children of George and Zaharoula Kokkoris. His father worked as a coal miner, while his mother cared for their home and family.
Vel honorably served his country, enlisting in the Navy from 1947 to 1950, dedicating 40 months to his service. On December 27, 1956, he married the love of his life, Kalliopi Sirinakis, and together they built a beautiful family, raising two daughters, Zaharoula and Nicoletta.
For many years, Vel and his family lived in Halkis, Greece, where he owned and operated a small furniture-making business. In search of new opportunities, the family moved to Portland, Oregon, on October 20, 1970, where they built a new life together. Vel became a proud U.S. citizen in 1974, embracing his new home while never forgetting his Greek roots.
A skilled carpenter and painter by trade, Vel worked both independently and for Portland Bottling Company, where he remained for over 15 years before retiring in 1993 at the age of 65.
Vel was a humble and kind-hearted man who lived his life with patience, faith, and love. He treated everyone with respect and compassion, always guided by his strong belief in God.
In 2021, following a diagnosis of COPD and heart failure, Vel defied the odds and remained with his family for several more cherished years, cared for by his devoted daughter, Zaharoula.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his wife, Kalliopi; his daughters, Zaharoula and Nicoletta; his son-in-law, Kiriakos; his brother, Athanasios; his grandchildren, Dina, Kosta, and Costa; and his great-grandchildren, Kaleb, Yanni, and Kyra.
Vel’s life was one of dedication, love, and quiet strength. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. May his memory be eternal.
