Vernon Eckhardt served his country in the United States Coast Guard during the Vietnam era. Vern volunteered to enlist in the Coast Guard in 1959 and served six years as a Machinist Mate and a Boilermaker. He loved being aboard ship and served around four years on the USCG Cutter Winona. During that time, he made two trips around Cape Horn and had served in various areas of the Atlantic and Pacific regions, including Vietnam, before he was medically discharged.
For his honorable service, Petty Officer 3rd Class Eckhardt was awarded the National Defense Service medal, Good Conduct medal, Vietnam Service medal, and Coast Guard Sea Service ribbon.
During his civilian life, Vern worked as a certified welder. He enjoyed playing the accordion, listening to rock n' roll, loved trains, and his pet parrot named Reba and his Doberman.
During his time at the Oregon Veterans' Home, Vern enjoyed attending outings, visiting with staff and volunteers, and attending our church services regularly. He was a quiet man but always had a pleasant word for everyone. Vern enjoyed keeping in touch with his beloved spouse, Carol, as much as he could. He was loved by many and will be missed by all.
"The loss is immeasurable, but so is the love left behind."
