Virginia Elizabeth Engel was born in Portland, Oregon, on October 25, 1930, to Robert Bruce and Elizabeth Ida Clay. She lived her entire life in Portland graduating from Jefferson High School and the University of Portland where she earned a Bachelor's Degree. While attending the University of Portland, she met her husband, Edward Engel. They were married on June 6, 1952 at the University of Portland Chapel, and remained together for over 50 years until Edward's death in 2006.
Virginia was a hard worker employed as a registered nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland until shortly after her children were born. Over the next 27 years, she and her husband raised four daughters in the hills of Southwest Portland. After her daughters left home, Virginia returned to school and earned a Master's Degree from OHSU. She then worked as a mental health nurse practitioner at OHSU until she retired in her early 70s. After retirement, she performed volunteer work for the Assistance League and indulged in some of her life passions.
Virginia was bright, lovely, artistic, athletic, and adventuresome. She loved anything related to the outdoors, including gardening, hiking, camping, mountain climbing, and bird watching. She and her husband were also avid readers with hundreds of books lining the walls of their home. Virginia will be dearly missed by her family and those that really knew her.
