

Walter August Krummel passed away peacefully with family at his side on March 11, 2011. He was born April 4, 1922, in St. Louis, Missouri, to August Phillip Krummel and Katherine Bonenberger Krummel, and was the second of four children. He grew up playing stickball, baseball, and football in St. Louis, and graduated from Roosevelt High School. He served nearly three years in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific in World War II, and married Ruth Marilyn Fitzgerald, also of St. Louis, upon his return. They raised four children in the St. Louis area and in Coos Bay, Oregon, after moving there in 1960.
Walter worked most of his adult life for the Bell Telephone Company in St. Louis and General Telephone Company in both Coos Bay and Beaverton, Oregon, retiring as Service Facilities Supervisor in 1983. He and Ruth were active in the Little Theater on the Bay in Coos Bay for most of the 20 years they lived in the area, Walter on stage, as well as back stage doing lights and sound. They were members of the St. Monica's Catholic Church in Coos Bay, and St. Pius X Catholic Church in Portland. While at St. Pius, Walter was active for several years in the St. Vincent de Paul Society, especially in the food pantry. In the over-55 community in Aloha that he and Ruth lived in since 1991, they were both active in various social and community activities, making many friends among their neighbors.
Walter was pre-deceased by his wife Ruth, his parents August and Katherine, his sister, Glorianna, and brother, Edward. He is survived by his children, Kathleen (John) Schmitz of Concord, California; Dennis Krummel of Independence, Oregon; Dianna (David) Hinderlie of Seattle, Washington; Robin (Mindi) Krummel of Tualatin, Oregon; his sister Estelle (Floyd) Gabel of Chillicothe, Missouri; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, and his special lady friend, Nadine Dailey of Beaverton, Oregon.
A memorial Mass and celebration of life will be held at 11am, Saturday, March 19, 2011, in St. Pius X Church, 1280 NW Saltzman Rd., Portland. Arrangements by Skyline Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home. Private inurnment will be in Willamette National Cemetery.
