

June B. Broughton passed away peacefully on September 5, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. June was born June 10, 1925 in Utica, NY, and is the daughter of the late Frank T. and Isabelle Virkler Barnum. She grew up in New Hartford, N.Y., attending high school there, where she was president of Kappa Epsilon sorority. She worked for WIBX in Utica, N.Y., and after receiving her certification from Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School, served as Emily Post's private secretary in New York City. She later became a member of the secretarial staff at Utica College, where she met her future husband, Dr. Bradford B. Broughton, who was a professor there. After they were married and had moved to Potsdam, N.Y., June worked as a secretary in the Alumni office at Clarkson University. She later became secretary for Clarkson president Bill Whitson during his tenure there. Later, she was a secretary in the Clarkson Graduate School. She received her Degree of Bachelor of Professional Studies, with great distinction, from Clarkson University in 1981, and while studying there, was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi honorary society. June was a longtime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Potsdam. She sang in the church choir, served as a lector, played the organ for funerals, and taught religious education. June will be remembered for her quick wit and spirited personality, and for bringing laughter into the lives of everyone she met. June is survived by her children Megan B. (Andris) Blumbergs, Thad B. (Mary) Broughton, as well as her grandchildren, Kristoffer Blumbergs, Rebecca Blumbergs, Myles Broughton and Isabelle Broughton. Friends may call at Garner Funeral Home, 10 Lawrence Ave., Potsdam, on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 from 4-6 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at 10:00 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Potsdam with Msgr. Robert Aucoin celebrating.
