She and Melvin met in 1944 while she was working in a Tuscaloosa restaurant. Melvin was enjoying lunch with friends when he met Elva Nell. The two went on a four hour date that same evening to the county fair before Melvin departed for two years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. They both kept in touch through correspondence for two years by mail and then they married on January 12, 1946. Together through 67 years of marriage, Elva Nell and Melvin traveled to nearly all 50 states, raised a family and retired in Montgomery and later relocated to Prattville. Elva Nell was an earnest follower of Jesus and member of the First Presbyterian Church in Prattville.
She will always be remembered for her loving and gracious heart, grit, courage, selflessness, banana pudding, and gumbo.
