There's so many things that come to mind when I think of my grandfather I'm not sure how long this is gonna take me to type or if it'll even be read in its entirety. The first thing that comes to mind when I think about my grandfather is his truck. The faded hood, the duck tape on the console, the cracked dash and the way that early 2000's dodge upholstery smelled after baking in the sun. I remember the sound of it coming up the driveway every time he would come home and how he'd always tell me it was the greatest truck ever built, similar to everything he owned. I remember him picking me up from school almost every day from the time I was in elementary school until my last day of middle school. I remember how he and my grandmother would always make sure we were ok when things weren't so good. I remember the first set of golf clubs he bought me and how he tried his best to pass on his passion for the sport to me. I remember helping him take the cover off the pool at the beginning of the summer and putting it back on at the end whenever I could be there. What I will miss most about my grandfather is that he never passed to harsh of judgement on my decisions. He plainly gave me his opinion on the matter but encouraged me to live my life in the way that I saw fit. He never made me feel shame for any of my decisions no matter how he felt about them. I remember how he would bring the car around every Sunday for my grandmother when leaving church so that she didn't have to walk. He was a man who has helped me to understand who I was and that there were just some things I couldn't control in life. He was patient and kind. I deeply regret not being there for his last days. He will be dearly missed

He had a way of communicating a lot with very little.  You could always tell what he meant, and he never had to say much. He had a comforting touch and a comforting look. I think even if he had never said a word to any of us, we still would have known that he loved us so much. One anecdote really comes to mind when I think of him. For a few years during grade school, Daddad picked me up from school every day. And he had an Emmylou Harris CD in his truck that he played EVERY SINGLE DAY. He had two favorite songs on that CD, though, and he'd skip the rest until we'd already heard those two. So, 5 days a week for several years, I heard Together Again and Making Believe by Emmylou Harris. The ride home usually allowed for about half of another song on that CD,  but oftentimes, he'd just skip back to the one we heard first.

There are so many wonderful memories of Dad that it would take me a book to write them all down, so here are just a few. Growing up on our farm in Pike Road, Dad would let me follow along behind him as a little girl, as he worked. He would take me to run errands at places like H&H Livestock where I would “demo” the horse saddles carefully placed on workhorses; go to the dairy barn to watch the cows being milked; and experience a live cattle auction at Hodges Stockyard as well as our own cattle auctions on the farm. In early elementary school, Dad and I did Indian Princess together through the YMCA with other dads and daughters. He was Big Deer and I was Little Deer. We had a great time and somehow I inherited the “talking stick” and big deer hyde drum the dads made for our tribe. I was always sure Dad would come through for whatever I might volunteer him for even though I may not have asked his permission first. If my 4th grade class needed a Christmas tree, I was sure Dad wouldn’t mind cutting an extra Cedar tree or two and he didn’t. He always came through. I have heard it said that sometimes a person’s view of God our Heavenly Father come from the kind of relationship they had with their earthly father. There is a beautiful Children’s song called, “Jesus Strong and Kind”. Because my dad was strong and kind, it was easy for me to believe that about my Heavenly Father as well. As Ruth has said, there are so many stories about my dad, it is hard to tell just one. Dad made growing up on a farm seem like the best childhood a person could have. He took extreme pride in taking care of the farm and I believe he installed that in all of his kids. As a teenager one of my favorite things to do was cut the grass with dad's John Deer tractor. I remember it was also hard for dad to say no to us, if we wanted something he worked hard to make it happen. I loved animals when I was a child and my grandparents always had a cat and that cat had several kittens. Every time the cat had kittens I wanted to take one home and I knew who to ask. His only rule was, I couldn't take more than 2 home at a time. One of my earliest memories was going to Disney World and riding Dumbo with my dad, (I also wanted a baby elephant). I remember dad could barely fit in the ride with me, but he didn't let that stop him from riding. He made it seem like he wanted to ride Dumbo just as much as I did! 
Dad never complained, even up to the last few hours of his life he was giving the nurses a thumbs up. With good reason too, he was going to be in Glory soon!!!

I always loved our driveway talks about golf, cars, trucks, farming, work, our kids, and our Auburn Tigers. 

Touching story- my dad who passed away in 2006, used to call me after the Auburn games to discuss the game, players, coaching, etc. I really missed those calls. Sarah and I married in August 2015. Not the best year for Auburn football. On Sept 5, 2015, my phone rang just after Auburn squeaked by Louisville and it was Tom. We discussed the game, players, coaching, and our thoughts of the season to come. From that point forward, I looked forward to our calls after the games, just like I so enjoyed with my dad. Best Father- in -law a man could ever hope for.

A great memory that I had with Dad was going to To the John Deere store and cutting grass with him at Young Meadows

Tom was my friend and best neighbor that I have ever had. He will always be missed by my family, friends and I. I will miss all our driveway talks for we agreed on everything. Tom was a great person in everyway and Will missed so much!  -Bob Hinson
