Kari was born in Finland to William and Vieno Aalto. The family immigrated to Canada in 1954 and lived in Ontario and various communities around BC until they settled in Prince George in 1962. Kari was baptized, and confirmed his faith in his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ in 1979 at Zion Lutheran Church.
Kari spent many years working as a retail clerk with Woodward’s Food Floor (where he met Gerlinde) and Safeway before turning his talents toward handyman work, where his skill as a true jack-of-all-trades shone. He had a lifelong passion for amateur (HAM) radio, the challenge of fixing almost anything, experimenting with electrical designs and inventions, and driving his classic Mustang. He found joy in windy days, the ocean, and long road trips shared with Gerlinde.
He was predeceased by his parents and by his brothers-in-law, Ed and Dale. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Gerlinde (married in 1973); his sisters Tuula (Ray) and Marilyn; his sisters-in-law Irmgard and Annette (Rob); his nieces and nephews Brent (Cindy), Brian (Jill), Kristi (Jim), Farrell (Stephanie), Jenna, and Danika; as well as his great-nieces and great-nephews.
Many thanks to the UHNBC Doctors and nurses – especially Doctors Saif, Sahi, Bashir, Din and Singh for their care and kindness during Kari’s lengthy illness and hospital stay.
A funeral service will take place at Zion Lutheran Church, 180 Tabor Boulevard, on Saturday, February 21st at 1 pm, with light refreshments after. Interment to follow reception.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation (Diabetes/Renal Fund) in Kari’s memory would be gratefully appreciated.
Kari will be missed but will live forever in our hearts.
