Courageous, passionate, ambitious and cheeky are just a few words to describe the wonderful soul Velma was. She brought a special light with her everywhere she went. Velma was sadly taken by her short but courageous battle with cancer on August 26th 2025. Velma faced it head on and fought hard just like she did with everything in her life. Her contagious laugh and sense of humor was heard right until the end, despite how she was feeling. She went peacefully and on her own terms with Greg, her best friend, by her side. Velma is survived by husband Greg and beloved fur babies Allan, Axel and Linda as well as all her family and close friends. She will be forever missed.
Velma was born on November 10th, 1965, in Kitimat BC. She later moved to Prince George BC where she graduated high school. Later in 1988 she got her job at Auto Magic and worked in the upstairs auto accessories department. In that time, she started dating the love of her life, Greg Parker, who she then married in October of 1992. After about 8 years at Auto Magic, she made the bold move to Spruce Capital Feeds to help her Husband, Greg and his business partner Harold Giesbrecht with the books.
In her time at Spruce Capital Feeds, she found a way to incorporate her love for clothing and shoes into her everyday life. Velma, Greg and Harold created the upstairs Western Wear department and filled it with all the top brands of western fashion. Owning a clothing store definitely worked out for Velma as she was able to grow her footwear collection to over 1000 pairs, and her clothing collection…. she would never have to repeat an outfit. Velma poured her heart into creating a space for people to enjoy shopping, but also to come and enjoy a visit with her and her team. After 25+ years of owning and managing Spruce Capital Feeds, Velma, Greg and Harold made the hard decision to sell the store in early 2024. They all 3 retired (for the most part) with plans to travel and enjoy the benefits of the business they spent their lives building.
After living in town for 10+ years, Greg and Velma made the decision to move out to the country and enjoy some peaceful living in 2005. They built a beautiful home that Velma described as her sanctuary. After hours, you could find her on the back deck or in her chair sipping a glass of wine or good tequila. Being at home with her fur babies was her favourite part of the day. She loved to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet space they created.
Velma was passionate about life and took pride in everything she did. She cared so much about all the people close to her, whether they were family or friends. Her free spirit attitude was one of a kind and she was a crucial part of several people’s lives. Velma was one tough chick. Let’s hope there is a shoe store for her on the other side.
Greg and family would like to thank all the doctors and nurses who helped Velma stay comfortable during her fight. A huge thank you to Dr. Inban Reddi who helped throughout the whole process and made sure Velma got the best care possible. Also, a huge thank you to the PG cancer clinic, especially Krysten Curtis-Hartford, a nurse at the Cancer Clinic that made sure Velma received the best care possible.
