It is with great sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing of Don, aged 64, after a lengthy and complicated illness. He passed away peacefully at the Prince George Hospice House with his loving wife by his side.
Predeceased by his parents Donald and Ursula, as well as best friends Harvey and Ken.
Survived by his devoted wife Ljuba; stepdaughters, Mary (Tim) and Anita (Wes); precious grandsons, Jacob, Zachary, Mathew and Evan; extended family, Chelsey (Dan) and Charlotte, Jared (Karly) and Eloise; brothers, Carsan (Anna), Jason (Amanda); nephews, Justin (Nadine), Kevin, Andrew (Cassie) and Brayden; sisters, Janice (Dennis) and Jane, as well as many aunts, uncles, and close relatives back in Germany.
Don was born in Paderborn, Germany and as a young teen completed his schooling to become a chef while working weekends at his uncle’s pub. In 1977, he ventured to Canada and made his way to Prince George where he found work and settled. In 1982 he found employment at Esther’s Inn as the Food and Beverage Manager where he remained until his retirement in 2009. It was here that he met and married his wife Ljuba in 1992. In their many years together, they enjoyed camping with the family, fishing with friends, and traveling. After retirement they became snowbirds, wintering in Palm Springs where they met many wonderful people.
Don will be remembered as an avid outdoorsman; hunting, fishing, and gold panning whenever he could.
We would like to thank Dr. Wilson, Dr. Buchanan, and Dr. Appleby, as well as the many other compassionate doctors, nurses, and care-aids who tended to his needs, both at home and in hospice.
A Memorial Service will be held at Assman’s Funeral Chapel, 1908 Queensway on Tuesday, July 12th at 10:00am. Luncheon and refreshments to follow at the Bon Voyage Plaza, 4366 Hwy 16 West.
May you walk in peace, the hunt be bountiful, the fish run plenty, and your pan be filled with gold.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Prince George Hospice Society.
