Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Matilda (Shea) Lyons.
She was the loving mother of Brian Binegar, Paul Binegar and his wife Patricia, Marianne Bray and her husband Matthew, and Bethany Binegar; cherished grandmother of Elayna, Kayla, Matthew, Brandon, Brie, Connor and Grace; and great-grandmother of Colin and Lea; and sister of Joan Brenda Sabatino and the late Richard, Robert, and Donald Lyons.
Much love and appreciation goes out to Barbara’s dedicated caregivers, who were so good to her, as well as her treasured nieces, nephews, in-laws, neighbors and friends who were always visiting, calling, and cooking. All of your efforts eased her days with smiles, laughter, company, and dignity. It’s the smallest things that are the biggest.
Barbara was a lifelong communicant of St Augustine Church and a long time employee of the phone company, but her greatest love was family. Through the years, she hosted every holiday get together for as long as she could. She never smoked and rarely drank, but kept ashtrays and a stocked liquor cabinet for guests. Every year brought homemade birthday cakes, St Patrick’s Day wearing o’ the green, St. Joseph’s Day zeppola, Easter egg hunts, cookouts and sparklers for the 4th of July. She bought big candy bars and bubblegum for Halloween so the kids would remember her house as the best. Thanksgiving dinner meant days of leftovers and too many pies, and every Christmas she made trays of cookies wrapped in ribbons for anyone who happened to come visiting. No one left empty handed. Her home meant everything to her because it meant family.
Barbara, and her husband Dale, revolved their lives around their grandchildren. Whether it was babysitting, rides to and from school or work, days at the beach, driving hundreds of miles to watch swim meets, or inviting the kids to stay at “Camp Nana Grandpa.”
Her visitation will be held Thursday, January 12th from 9:30 – 10:30 in the Pontarelli-Marino Home, 971 Branch Ave, Providence followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 in St. Augustine Church, 639 Mt. Pleasant Ave, Providence. Burial will follow at 1:00 at the RI Veterans’ Cemetery, Exeter.
Barbara’s family invites you to join them afterwards at The Back 40 in North Kingstown for a good Irish time in her honor.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, www.michaeljfox.org
