David Sugarman of Providence, RI and Gouldsboro, ME passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 8, 2026. He was the son of the late Max and Estelle Sugarman. He is survived by his wife Nancy Lovejoy Sugarman and his children Daniel Sugarman of Boston, MA and Elizabeth Sugarman and husband Braden Lafauce of North Yarmouth, ME. David outlived his siblings, Calvin, Louis, Mitchell and Rachel Sugarman Spector.
David graduated from Hope High School in Providence and was then drafted into the US Army, the day the Korean War ended in 1953. He graduated from the University of Rhode Island, winning the Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award. He was an Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity member, International Relations Club member, excelled on the Varsity Track team and participated in many other intra-mural sports. He then went on to pursue a law degree, an endeavor that was cut short upon his fathers unexpected death.
His father was the founder of the Max Sugarman Funeral Home in Providence, R.I. David then became the director and president for several years. This was followed by a long and successful career in real estate where he developed and managed properties in the greater Providence area and South County. At one point he was one of the largest land developers in southern RI.
David had numerous interests and passions throughout his life including gardening, collecting oriental rugs, sailing, and a love of opera, having attended many performances. In the Army he was stationed in Governors Island, NY and took the ferry to Times Square often, where he saw many Broadway productions. He loved being close to the ocean, a passion he developed from childhood when his family spent summers at their Rocky Point beach cottage. He recalled picking clams by the house, eating them on the spot with his father and siblings.
David later spent summers with his family in Narragansett, R.I. enjoying the beaches and ocean. In the 70's he discovered and fell in love with the coast of Maine. Retiring he moved to Gouldsboro, Maine and enjoyed years of ocean views on Frenchman's bay, near Acadia. He spent winters in Hilton Head, SC with his wife Nancy and their beloved dog Moses. Moses was well known and admired by many.
His funeral service will be held Thursday, February 12, 2026 at 12:30 pm at Sugarman-Sinai Memorial Chapel, 458 Hope Street, Providence. Burial will follow in Lincoln Park Cemetery, Warwick.
