

Delgado, Evelyn G. (Hammond), 82, of 76 Camp Street, passed away on Monday, September 24, at the Miriam Hospital. She was the beloved wife of John L. Delgado, Sr., who died this past July. They were married for over 65 years.Born in Providence on October 3, 1924, she was the daughter of the late George and Vivian (Jackson) Hammond.Mrs. Delgado was a nurse at the former Lying-In Hospital and Women & Infants Hospital for over 30 years before her retirement in 1989. She worked in the special care nursery unit and gave loving care to hundreds of premature infants during her tenure. Mrs. Delgado affectionately referred to her babies as "sugar foot" and would often play Frank Sinatra songs while tending to their needs.Mrs. Delgado is survived by her loving children, John L. Delgado, Jr. of Baton Rouge, LA, Sharon Fordham of Providence, and Perry Delgado of Providence; Two brothers, Robert Hammond, of East Providence, and Paul Hammond, of Milton, Ma., and one sister, Vivian Moore, of Providence. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren: Nadine, Teddy, Lisa, Terri, John III, Darrie, Damian, and Eric; 13 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and cousins. She was the sister of the late Kenneth, Aubrey, and Eugene Hammond, and Olive Greene.Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service on Monday, October 1 at 10:00 a.m. in the Olney Street Baptist Church, Providence. Calling hours will be conducted at The Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home at 331 Smith Street in Providence on Sunday, September 30 from 4-7:00 p.m. Mrs. Delgado will be buried with her husband John at the RI Veterans Cemetery in Exeter.
