Born in Providence on February 26, 1935, he was the son of the late Gaythorne J. Angell Sr. and Victoria (Avedisian) Angell.
Poochie was the devoted father of Lori L. Savickas (Joseph), Richard J. Angell (Maria), and the late Michael G. Angell; a loving grandfather to Nicole, Richard Jr., Joseph Jr., Pucci, Samantha, Nicholas, Victoria, and Kimberly; and a proud great grandfather to Michael, Mason, Richard, Grant, Alexia, Tanner, Cash, Pucci, Charles, and Alice. A veteran of the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, Poochie completed 19 jumps during his service. He was known for his generosity and his unwavering willingness to help family and friends. He enjoyed a good game, and you could always find him supporting his family from the stands, whether at the court, field, or ice rink. He was the proud sponsor of the 350 Club and “Poochie’s” amateur softball and basketball teams. In recognition of his dedication to the sport, he was inducted into the Rhode Island Slow-Pitch Softball Hall of Fame in 2020.
Poochie was a man of quick wit who formed countless lifelong friendships through his travels and life experiences. He had a remarkable gift for storytelling and was always ready with encouragement or advice, qualities that made people naturally gravitate toward him. He was also a generous supporter of local causes, hosting many events benefiting the CJ Buckley and Tory Marandos memorial foundations.
He loved thoroughbred horse racing and a good card game. He cherished his time spent in Saratoga Springs, NY, “the summer place to be”, as well as many years in Hollywood, FL. Above all, he treasured time spent surrounded by family and friends. Always a gentleman. A life well lived.
