

Narragansett -- Allen, Joseph D., 85, of Vanderbilt Drive, died Tuesday at South County Hospital. He was the loving husband of Florence L. (Durkin) Allen. They had been married for fifty-two years. Born in Providence, a son of the late Phillip and Margaret (O'Brien) Allen, he had lived in the Mount Pleasant section of Providence most of his life before moving to Narragansett nine years ago. Joe worked in the Sub-Station Department for the Narragansett Electric Company for thirty years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Utility Workers of New England, Local 310. He served his country proudly during World War II in the United States Navy. He was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church, a member of the Providence Elks Lodge14, B.P.O.E., and a former coach of Cola Fuel in the Mount Pleasant Little League. A loyal Boston Red Sox fan, he attended spring training in Winter Haven, Florida for many years. Although living in Narragansett for the past nine years, his heart remained in Mount Pleasant, and he enjoyed his frequent trips back to "the city" to visit his many friends.Besides his wife, he leaves two sons; Daniel J. Allen and his wife Ruth, and Kevin J. Allen, all of Narragansett, a daughter; Nancy Allen Santucci and her husband Anthony of South Kingstown, and three grandchildren; Allen, Julia, and Olivia Santucci, and several nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Dennis J. Allen and brother of the late William, Phillip, John and Edward Allen and Mildred McNamara.The funeral will be held Saturday, at 7:45 am, from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence. Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 am in the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, Academy Avenue, Providence. Burial, with military honors, will be in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours Friday, 4 - 8 pm.
