

BristolJoseph M. Burns, 88, of the RI Veterans Home, Bristol, an iron worker for Local 37 Iron Workers for 40 years, died Thursday at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center. After his retirement, Mr. Burns also worked at the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul for several years as a custodian and watchman.Born in Cranston, a son of the late William J. Burns, Sr. and Mary E. (Flaherty) Burns, he was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific. Mr. Burns was a big sports fan of the Celtics, the NE Patriots and the Boston Red Sox. He is survived by a sister, Margaret Delaney and her husband, Lionel F. Delaney, and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was the brother of the late Mary Burns, Helen Motta, John J. Burns, William J. Burns, Jr. and Thomas F. Burns.The funeral will be held Monday at 7:30 a.m, from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence. Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 1525 Cranston Street, Cranston. Burial with Military Honors will be in the RI Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.
